Presidents Message

Retail is a difficult trade at the best of times but that is also what makes it so fascinating and stimulating. This past season has been particularly challenging with seasonal stock not matching the unseasonable weather. However, this provides us with an opportunity to offer something different to tempt customers to buy things they don't actually need - but can't live without.

It's also a time when it is reassuring to speak to other retailers and know how the market is actually performing thus providing something to measure yourself (and your business performance) against. This is where being part of an organisation like IFRA can really make a difference. I think we are all in the same boat (quite literally in the case of those of you unfortunate enough to have been in flood hit areas) but you can rest assured that there is always another member available at the end of a telephone in case of need.

Of course, my colleagues and I on the Council are always available to you if you need any tips on fantastic stock offers, novel ideas for clearing dead lines and you should not forget our legal help-line should you need specific legal advice on any subject. We on the Council never forget that it is you, the members, who really make this organisation and I cannot emphasise enough the value you can get out of it if you use what is available to you. It can feel very isolating working on your own and it is encouraging to know there are others facing the same issues and this helps to create a 'footwear retailing' community where we can all work together.

I find that it can be somewhat daunting buying for a season when you are struggling to recover from the one you've just had. However, manufacturers are working to offer us something different and the joys of the British climate mean that next summer could be one of the driest and hottest we've ever had - and sandals will be in short supply! Or not? Who knows? Supply and demand - and it's uncertainty - is one of the quirks of our trade and does it really influence sales anyway...? Please contact the office, Tel. 0870 330 8620 if there is anything you feel you would like to see us doing or any comments or points you would like to make. We look forward to hearing from you.
